Java is one of the most popular programming languages in the world. Java was invented in 1995 by James Gosling. Java is owned by Oracle. Today, billions of devices run Java. Cars, mobile phones, and many other electronic devices are programmed using Java Language.

What does Java do?
  • Java enables humans to write instructions that a computer can perform.
  • It is used for Mobile Applications, Desktop & Web Applications, Games, Web servers, Database connections, and much more

Java is an independent language. It means it does not require a specific operating system to run. The Java Virtual Machine ensures that the same Java code can be run on different operating systems. That means Java works on different platforms such as Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.

One more thing you need to remember is that: Java is an object-oriented programming language. As you progress through the tutorial, you will learn more about this program and how & why it is an object-oriented programming language.

Similar Languages

Java is similar to C++ and C. So, people familiar with those languages can switch often. Other programming languages include Python, R, Julia, Scala, etc.

If you are a beginner, Python would be the easiest one to learn. You can check out our Python Tutorial for more details.
